~ Whitehaven Beach, Australia: Voted world’s 3rd top beach, and #1 in Australia! ~

It was as beautiful as the Internet said it would be.

It was a 3 night and 4 day all inclusive trip, that cost each of us AUS$460. The boat was a catamaran that slept 26 people, and the tour included all of our food, snorkelling gear, bed linens, etc. We just paid for our booze, and dives.

The sleeping quarters were absolutely tiny, but for some reason I slept like a baby each and every night. And the crew? The crew was fantastic! They made the trip so much fun with their jokes, and delicious (whoa, we’re on a boat) food.

I also woke up one morning and was tanned (woop!), and no hair dryer / straightener (obvs) meant I was a frizzy-Lizzie! The group of 26 was great too - if you ever find yourself in the Whitsundays, you’ll get a million and one tours thrown your way, so be aware that there are LOTS of party-wahoo-drunk-hookup boats. Wings was not one of them, but rather a late twenty, early thirty bunch of good people. Really, I LOVED it.

Where in the World is Liz?

Since I stepped foot on Australian soil way back when, I knew I wanted to head to the Whitsunday Islands. To me, the Whitsundays represented cliché Australian beaches - hot, beautiful, amazing, down-under sand between your toes! They represented a world of paradise that couldn’t be found in Canada, but only on Australian soil.

The Whitsunday Islands are made up of 74 islands located about 900km (410 miles) north of Brisbane on Australia’s east coast (see blue dot below). They’re a hotspot for backpackers as well as the rich & famous (Oprah popped in - with her audience - back in 2010) and I would highly recommend them as a “must do” if you head ever head to Australia.

Despite flying into Hamilton Island (the major, luxurious, richest-island-in-Australia) we stayed in Airlie Beach - a $45 ferry away, backpacker’s coastal, haven with $30/night rooms, $2 pints, and a party scene that, no matter the night, always saw the sunrise.

We had planned two days in Airlie Beach simply to swim & hangout, and 4 days on a yacht tour, but as it turned out, one day was plenty for Airlie Beach (if that). A little fun fact (which all the tourist websites seemed to conveniently leave out) is that despite the beaches being stunning in this part of the world, the jelly fish and sting rays (of killed Steve Irwin fame) are so prominent that it means no swimming in the big, blue, sea, unless you have a fully, protected, wet suit on.

Booo, but luckily Airlie Beach was two steps ahead of us and had a beautiful “lagoon” to swim in, and you better believe we took mad advantage of this.

So as I noted above, Airlie Beach is a backpacker’s town, which means everywhere you go people are trying to give you “the best deal ever” on some trip to this place, or that, but Angela and I had done our research, and knew exactly what we wanted to do: leave Airlie Beach (A), and head to the infamous Whitehaven Beach (B) and then go snorkelling/diving on the Great Barrier Reef (C). Having a plan made choosing a tour fairly easy (hint hint, nudge nudge, have a plan - as it can be overwhelming without one.)

And? we chose the Emporer Wings Diving Adventures tour, and let me tell you - it did not disappoint…

Suffice to say I have found the world’s most expensive Internet ($18/h!), so blogging has been few and far between these days, despite having soooo much to say!

I have left Brisbane and am now up in the Whitsunday Islands, which are proving to be as beautiful as the photos showed, and this afternoon I head out to the Great Barrier Reef and infamous Whitehaven beach until Friday!

Angela, my best friend from Canada is with me (yay!!!), and I am feeling incredibly lucky at this moment in time.
